Changing A Tongue Ring

Changing A Tongue Ring For at least the first 8 weeks after you receive a tongue piercing, you should go to a professional jeweler for changing a tongue ring. Due to the swelling that occurs after the initial pierce, your first barbell is going to be longer than your tongue is thick. After 5 to 10 days, you will probably be able to go to the piercer to have a new, shorter bar put in.

If you remove or replace tongue jewelry during the healing period, the hole can close up very quickly, and you it’s a painful process to reinsert the jewelry. Many people discover that it takes 1 to 2 years for a tongue piercing to actually get to the point where jewelry can be taken out for longer than a day.

For actual tongue rings, you will have to get a piercer to change the jewelry for you. Special pliers are needed to remove the ball from the ring. With labret studs, you can remove them yourself once the piercing is fully healed. Use the same gauge of jewelry. If you cannot put the new piece in for some reason, you can go to the piercing studio and they will reopen the hole with a taper pin; this isn’t painful.

To change a labret stud, sit down with a towel in front of you, to catch the ball if you drop it. They are easy to lose. Hold the back-place of the stud between your front teeth, biting down firmly. Continue slowly applying pressure until you have a firm hold of the stud, because biting down too quickly or hard can result in chipped or snapped teeth. The front of the stud will unscrew counter-clockwise and is tightened clockwise, just like a nut and bolt. So unscrew the front, remove the old stud and insert the new one. Grip the back-plate strongly between your teeth again, and screw on the front.
