After you receive a nipple piercing, you will need to allow
the area to heal for a few months, depending on what the professional
piercer advised. During the healing time, and maybe even for
a while afterwards, you should not be changing a nipple ring.
But once you’re good to go, it is great fun to find
new and fashionable styles of nipple rings to wear, so changing
a nipple ring is something you should know how to do. Here
are some tips to become successful at changing a nipple ring,
and causing the least amount of pain as possible.
n Especially for the first few times, you may want to take
a bath or use a hot compress to soften and relax the skin
around your nipple.
n Clean your hands, the piercing, and your new nipple ring
with antibacterial soap.
n You may want to grease the new nipple ring and your piercing
for a smoother change. Use a water-based lubricant, and put
it on the old nipple ring, rotating it gently so the oil can
go into your piercing.
n Grease the new nipple ring after you open it.
n Hold it in one hand, and pinch the skin next to the nipple
with your other hand. Massaging all the while, slowly insert
the new jewelry into the piercing as you are pinching the
skin. Continue until the end of your nipple exits the hole.
n Now you can screw or clip on any accessory.
n Wash the piercing again after changing a nipple ring, just
in case. This helps to lower your risk of infection.
Before changing a nipple ring, make sure that this new one
is the same gauge as the one you are currently wearing. If
you insert a thinner gauge, then your piercing will also become
thinner and you won’t be able to get the original jewelry
in later. And of course using a larger gauge is not possible
unless you stretch the hold, which is another, complicated
process.
